Escapism for the mind - your bi-monthly dose of Fernweh.
Tomorrow is Valentines Day. I used to find it painfully cringy and a little frustrating: why can't we show the people we love how we love them on our own terms? But in the past few years, I've shifted my perception.
Rather than using Valentine's Day as a day for over-the-top acts of material love for my partner or friends, I do something for myself. I buy myself flowers, get an expensive bottle of wine, run myself a bath, and do small things to show my body and my mind that I am thankful for showing up every day, come rain or shine.
I believe the most powerful gift is one of experience, where you are present in the moment and can make memories that will keep your heart warm, so this year, why not gift yourself a trip somewhere? Go alone, take friends, bring your partner or your dog, but do something for yourself that makes you feel alive.

I fell in love because...
The simple, sleek architecture thoughtfully frames the stunning landscape outside
Total privacy is guaranteed, and you have a lake literally on your doorstep
You must...
Drink coffee with your feet in the grass and sip wine while observing the stars
Go on some outdoor adventures: hiking, swimming and boating are all possible

A guest blog by writer Yessica Klein.
"I might live in Berlin by choice, but my heart belongs to North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). What I love about the most populous German state [...] are the hidden, historical gems [...] Call it the timber-house effect."
Her favourite villages are:
Bad Salzuflen
Blankenberg
Freudenberg
Lemgo
Warendorf
